There are a lot in the United States as well but it seems that Japan has much more. In many places in the United States, the ugly wires are placed underground so we don't have to see them.

I've thought this independently about Japan as well and thought about writing a blog post about it. In some areas near my apartment building there are huge tangles of clusters of wires that I can't imagine anyone knowing which wire goes where!

I just think if there is an earthquake or typhoon, it's going to be very dangerous on that street!
